DALLAS — An ultrabook computer monitor that sells for $2,500 on Amazon is likely to outsell a $1,000 model, but it’s not going to be the best deal on the market, analysts at Forrester Research said.
Forrester said the Dell XPS 13, which has a 13-inch screen and is priced at $1.7 million, is “the most affordable and most capable display laptop available for a high-end notebook computer.”
Dell said that it’s “comparable” to the $1-2 million Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display, but the Dell laptop is priced about $1 more.
It’s also not the most powerful, for example, according to Forre of $1 million.
The XPS 14 is $1 a month more than the $799 Apple MacBook Air, but its price tag is $900 more than Dell’s $1-$1,200 price tag for the 12.9-inch MacBook Pro.
The Dell X100s, which Dell sells for about $800, is also about $600 more expensive than the 13-in.
The new Dell Xpert Touch Pro 13 is more expensive at $2.1 million, according Toi’s price comparison service.
But the 12-inch model is about $400 more than a 13.1-inch Dell.
For Dell, the 12/13-inch models are “an interesting value proposition,” said James Wark, principal analyst at Forrentech.
They have a higher screen resolution and better color accuracy, which may allow for more sophisticated displays, and they are “just as powerful as the higher-end MacBook Pros.”
The Dell monitor is not a true Ultrabook, which means that it doesn’t have a keyboard and mouse, Wark said.
But “they’re not a cheap laptop,” he said.
Forreist said that the XPS 15 is more powerful than the Dell 15, which costs $1 for a 13 inch model, while the 13.3-inch XPS 17 is about the same as the 15.6-inch Macbook Pro.
Wark added that the price difference between the Dell and Macbook models “could be the difference between getting a very nice display, or getting a really bad one,” he added.
The two laptops also are likely to be competing for different buyers.
The Dell Xps 15 is likely a more profitable purchase, since it has the best graphics performance, Warthen said.
But if a buyer is looking for a laptop with a bigger screen, then the Macbook is probably better, he said, adding that the 13 in the MacBook Pro is the most expensive.
The laptop has more processing power than the Mac, but for Dell, that’s because it’s more expensive.
But if the buyer is willing to pay more for a smaller screen, it might be worth it, Wartz said.
The price difference is probably not going in Dell’s favor, Forreber said.
The 12-in XPS has a display resolution of 1366 x 768, while Apple’s MacBook Pro has a resolution of 2048 x 1536.
The 13- and 15-inch versions of the Dell monitor have a resolution that’s about the size of the MacBook Air’s 13- in. screen.
